This fantastic new Easyread Book and DVD is all about giving people with learning disabilities and/or Autism the information they need to make an informed choice about alcohol.
The NHS spends 2.7 billion pounds a year treating alcohol problems. In 2010, the number of people going to hospital because of alcohol in England, went over one million for the first time. Hospitals in north-west England treat one patient every 4 minutes with an alcohol problem.
A lot of people (including a lot of GPs) do not think people with learning disabilities and/or Autism drink alcohol at all. In the last 12 years since Valuing People, more people are living inclusive and full lives in the community.
People with learning disabilities and/or Autism are socialising, which is fantastic! When out with friends and family, people with learning disabilities and/or Autism are drinking alcohol.
There is very little information available about alcohol which is accessible to this group. This film shows people talking about alcohol and it gives people the important information about Alcohol so they can make an informed choice:
•What is a Unit?•What are the health effects of drinking alcohol?•Alcohol and Medication•How to stay safe•What to do if you need help and support
We worked with specialist Alcohol teams to produce this film which also comes with a personal record booklet to record what people have learned and also how much alcohol they drink at the moment (extra booklets available, please call 01709 710199 for information). The booklet also helps people to plan to cut down or stop drinking alcohol altogether. We hope this film and book will help people to talk about Alcohol and make an informed choice about it.
